Donald “Don” Bedford
October 4, 1942 – December 6, 2024

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Donald (Don) Bedford aged 82 on December 6th at Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg with his family by his side. For over 51 years he was a devoted husband to his beloved late wife Donna. Loving father to Randy and sadly his predeceased daughter Cindy. Proud Papa to Kyle, Joey, Sarah, Torey and Great Papa to Haylie and Colton.

A printer by trade he later joined the North York Fire Department in 1970 where he served for 25 years. Don was known as a reliable, respected firefighter, a great friend and of being strong of both mind and body. He was an avid reader who also loved to work out. It was on the fire department where the greatest friendships of his life were formed. It was here where he was grateful to meet his two best friends Paul and Al.

Don was an excellent athlete as a boy excelling in baseball, football and hockey. He was written up in the paper for pitching a no hitter at a CNE tournament, he was quarterback on his high school football team and was a great hockey player. As an adult he loved watching football and hockey and was an avid fan of the Argos and Leafs. Just recently enjoyed watching the Argos win the Grey Cup. The Leafs…well at least he remembered 67.

One of Don’s greatest passions were his dogs. Dogfather to Sable, the late very special Sage and numerous other rescue dogs to which he gave a great life. It was his dogs who helped get him through the many tragedies he sadly dealt with in his life. He also loved a cat named Stormy and put up with a number of other cats, guinea pigs etc for the betterment of his marriage.

Don’s life was always about others; be it his family, his friends or his pets. In keeping with this he did not want a funeral. However if you would like to honour him I’m sure he would appreciate a donation to any local dog rescue in his memory.

Subject: Volunteers Needed – Toy Drive Update-Shops at Don Mills

To: All Members

Hello everyone, it’s that time of year again and we are looking for volunteers for the Shops at Don Mills toy drive event you have all come to love. We have teamed up with Cadillac Fairview again and together with our media partner, Global, hope to put on a great event for both us as firefighters and the public to join us and donate toys.

We will have our firefighters out collecting toys from the public. There will be on-site entertainment and vendors from the shops as well. This is a great family event and I encourage each of you to bring your family out to help, enjoy the event, and help us make our 2024 Toy Drive season a great one.

We are looking for volunteers to assist with toy collection on the night of the event. The event is scheduled on Thursday, December 12th, from 4-7 pm, at CF Shops at Don Mills: 1090 Don Mills Rd. The event takes place in the Town Square, which is at the corner of Marie Labatte Rd./ Clock Tower Rd. At the end of the night, we will load our vehicles with the items collected and bring them back to our warehouse for sorting and distribution. Operations members can decide to wear fatigues/cold weather clothing or bunker gear, dress for the weather! Support division members can wear issued fatigues and cold-weather clothing.

As in past years, we can’t do this without your help. If you are available to attend, please RSVP to gberenz@torontofirefighters.org; this will secure your toque, and I know how much everyone is looking forward to getting one.

We hope to see many of you there, and we are so glad this event is back on and in full swing.

In Solidarity,

Geoff Berenz

Toronto Fire Electric Fire Apparatus

As times change, many fire departments are exploring the use of electric vehicle (EV) fire apparatus. In 2022, Toronto announced they were collaborating with Safetec Emergency Vehicles to acquire two VECTOR EV Pumpers. Although these vehicles are primarily all-electric, most come with an optional diesel ranger extender engine, making them hybrid in nature. Below, you’ll find some information about Toronto Fire Pumpers, and a video showcasing Victoria, British Columbia’s EV Squad 1.

“The electric pumper trucks, known as the VectorTM, represent the latest in green, energy-efficient technology for the daily use of fire services. Equipped with 316 kilowatts (kW) of proven automotive-grade batteries, these trucks will deliver the longest electric pumping duration in the industry, enabling Toronto Fire Services crews to drive and pump almost exclusively on electrically generated power.

In addition to meeting the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1901 – Standard for Automotive Fire Apparatus, the VectorTM battery storage solution allows for a complete NFPA compliant pump test. Operationally, these fire trucks are very similar to the existing fleet, eliminating the need for specialized training and making them almost immediately operational once delivered.”
