Calling all Brothers & Sisters!

The Annual Rob Penney Slow Pitch Tournament is back! This historic annual L3888 event promises to be the fun-filled tournament you’ve heard endless stories about.
Rob Penney was a respected and loved member of our department who, unfortunately, lost his battle with cancer at a time when job-related Cancer was barely on the public radar. April Luncheon

Ah, springtime—the season of renewal and warmth…except when it forgets its job description. Seems like spring has sprung in all the wrong directions this year, and not just weather-wise!

But hey, we’re still here, thriving in retirement and making the most of it. So let’s get together and celebrate life, stories, and the occasional ridiculousness of the world.

The Scarborough Retired Firefighters’ lunch is happening on Thursday, April 10th. It’s at the Harp & Crown Pub in Pickering (Kingston & Altona Rds.), kicking off at around 11:30 AM.

With all the chaos in the world (looking at you, certain southern neighbors), come out and leave the nonsense behind. Let’s share some laughs, some stories, and remind ourselves why retirement is the best gig ever.

See you there!

3888 Education Seminar on Estate Planning

3888 logo

There is more to it than just having a Will; if you don’t have a plan or just want to learn more, consider attending this 3888 Education Seminar on Estate Planning. Location is the 3888 Association office located at 14 Cosentino Drive, Toronto, Ontario, M1P 3A2

Education Seminar – April 23, 2025, Estate Planning

Post Date: March 28, 2025

Subject: Education Seminar – April 23, 2025 Estate Planning

To: All Members and Retirees

Back by popular demand and for one session only, the Education Committee is pleased to invite all members and retirees to learn about estate planning. Regardless of where you are in life, this incredible opportunity to learn about all aspects of estate planning and tax law will be extremely useful. The presenter, Georgia Swan, is a lawyer who specializes in estate planning, family law, and tax law. Georgia is a friend to firefighters and works for TD Wealth Services; However, she will not be selling or pushing products and services – only educating us as indicated below:

Estate Planning – What is it all about?

By now, many of us know the importance of having a will, a continuing power of attorney for property, and a power of attorney for personal care in place.  What can be confusing, however, is understanding what these documents are, why you should have them, what they are designed to do, and what decisions must be made to get them drafted properly. Is there a difference between getting a Will or Power of Attorney drafted and getting an estate plan done? How are estate planning decisions affected by real estate law, family law, tax law and business law considerations?  In this program, we will explain the estate planning process, but will also touch on specific issues such as planning for vulnerable beneficiaries, trusts, cottages and other special assets, foreign assets and beneficiaries, taxation, and other legal issues when you are considering transitioning assets while you are alive.

The committee has secured Wednesday, April 23, 2025 at the Association office for the presentation. Light breakfast options will be available at 8:15 am, with presentations beginning at 8:45 am.
