After a hesitant start to summer 2025, the season finally found its spark—and what a warm, vibrant stretch it’s been since! As we take a well-earned break from the sun and heat, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on the highlights so far and gear up for what’s ahead. Here’s a snapshot of what has taken place —and a peek at what’s coming next.
Toronto Fire Fighters Memorial
The Toronto Fire Service Memorial is all about honouring those individuals who gave their all in service and friendship.
This year saw seventeen names added. Capt Eric Adams (SFD #422) was one of those added, and it couldn’t be more fitting. Eric started with the Scarborough Fire Department in September 1974 and retired in September 2006. Eric passed away on September 12, 2023, from a job-related cancer. His dedication and service will not be forgotten.

Our very own John Vonk was on hand to represent our Scarborough Retirees by laying a wreath at the ceremony

Pat McManus- 1957 – 2025
Sadly, we lost Pat McManus to cancer in June. Pat was one of those people everyone looked up to and respected. His LODD funeral was packed, and it was amazing to see such a large contingent of his SFD Brothers and Sisters there to pay their respect. Pat loved sailing, so it was nice that it was held at Bluffers Park, Highland Yacht Club, complete with one last ride on his sailboat—a fitting tribute to a great person and dedicated firefighter.
Local 3888
This was an election year for L3888, which saw Mike Smith elected to President, Justin D’Aloisio as Vice President, and Chris Sornberer acclaimed as Secretary/Treasurer.
We wish outgoing President James Reed, Vice President John Maclachlan, and Executive Member John Blair all the best in their retirements. Enjoy this next chapter, Gentlemen.
Gerlando Peritore is the outgoing chair of the Ceremony and Bereavement Committee. We offer our deepest gratitude to Gerlando for his unwavering compassion and dedication. Throughout the years, Gerlando stood by our families during some of their most difficult moments, offering support and guidance throughout countless funerals. We wish him continued happiness and success in his future endeavours.
The new Ceremony and Bereavement Chair is Robert Burland. Many may know Robert, as he has been part of the WSIB Committee for some time.
August Lunch
As this summer seems to be going by at lightning speed, we take this opportunity to remind everyone of the summer Luncheons in Port Perry. They take place on the second Thursday of the month, and the next one will be on August 14th at the Lakeview Pub on Water Street in Port Perry. Things get underway around 11:30 am.
September Golf
We had 68 golfers out in June, and it was a good day, albeit the wind made things a bit challenging at times. Ed and I look forward to doing it all again on Wednesday, September 3rd. The format will be the same, with registration at 11:30 am and tee off at 12:30 pm.
So mark your calendars and get those foursomes together. We look forward to seeing everyone on the golf course.
Did you know
Canada’s population has been on a steady climb, reaching over 40 million in 2023, and with that growth, the number of centenarians has quietly skyrocketed. Back in 2000, there were just 3,393 Canadians aged 100 or older. Fast forward to 2023, and that number had more than tripled to 11,7052. It’s now the fastest-growing age group in the country, thanks to better healthcare, lifestyle awareness, and maybe a sprinkle of good genes. Looking ahead, Statistics Canada projects that by 2073, over 106,000 Canadians will be 100 or older.
So eat right, enjoy life, and the chance of you seeing the Leafs win the Stanley Cup might just be in the cards!!
