The International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) Memorial is a solemn reminder of the bravery and sacrifice of firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. It’s a place where families, friends, and colleagues can come together to honor their memory and find a sense of closure and peace. The tradition of inscribing names on the Memorial Wall and presenting the IAFF Medal and Flag is a poignant tribute to these heroes.
On October 2, 2024, I presented the IAFF Medal to Greg Simerson’s (#088) wife Fran, and his family. We met at TFS Station #111 and took a moment to remember Greg, his sharp wit, high hockey elbows, and his dedicated years with the SFD. His love for Hockey and the SFD will always be cherished.
Times such as these are touching examples of the brotherhood and support within the firefighting community. These gestures ensure that the valor and service of the fallen are forever remembered and that a grateful community supports their families. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit and camaraderie that defines the firefighting profession.
I also want to thank John Vonk for his help in making this happen.
Fraternally,
Chuck West
