WELCOME

Scarborough Ontario is the area that forms the eastern part of the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was a separate city for over 200 years, but has been part of the 'East District' of Toronto since 1998. This site has been created with the hope of fostering a means for former active and retired  firefighters and friends of the former Scarborough Fire Department and IAFF Local 626 to keep in touch and pass information through the electronic medium known as the internet. The goal is to keep it simple, hopefully informative, and with the assistances of both retired and active members it's hoped that we will expand on the bit of history and other pages already posted within the site. If you have something that may be of interest please feel free to contact the site custodian

Cook's Golf and BBQ [July 22/08]

Sounds like it was a great day of golf and food at Ray and Wendy Cook's place on July 17th. Al Adams has provided some feed back on the day. Go to the Retirees page to Al's feed back.

Jimmy Johnston - Seniority #303 [updated July22/08]

Jimmy started with the Scarborough Fire Department in 1966 and went on LTD in 1994. He gave 28 years of dedicated service to the City of Scarborough. Many of those years were spent representing the members of Local 626 as a member of the Executive Board. As a Board member Jimmy always worked hard to represent the 626 membership and many times put their concerns a head of his own. Today JJ finds his health acting up. His son Eddy has asked that his extended 626 family and friends be informed that he has some heart and lung issues and while the Doctors believe things can be improved there are no guarantees, being positive is a key factor.
Jimmy has been moved from Scarborough General's ICU to room 487 in the Crockford wing. He is permitted visitors, and I'm sure would enjoy seeing his 626 Brothers, Sisters and friends. If you require more information please contact JJ's son Eddy at 416-688-4045.

Ross Forfar Memorial Golf Tournament [June 29/08]

This year saw another great turnout for a good day of golf, food and drink. Held again this year at Sleepy Hollow Country Club in Stouffville, the event was attended by many of our brothers, sisters and friends. There was even a little history shared with regards to lawn instruments.

Successful once again, $12,205.00 was raised and will go to Fire Fighters' Cancer Research at the Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation. This brings the three year total to almost $30,000.00

It's a great day of camaraderie - watch for it next year!

Don't Be Me [Mar 17/08]

Often many of us take our health for granted. Even with the recent additions to presumptive legislation in Ontario you will still hear of many Brother or Sister firefighters who do not have regular checkups and screenings. The following letter from the late Lieutenant Bob Kilduff of Boston Fire has been posted in the hopes that those who have not started to have regular exams may start.
Stay Safe - Stay healthy.

Fires of the Past [ June 15/08]

Fires from the past is a new page which will be expanded on as time permits. It is expected to contain those larger or more stubborn fire in Scarborough's past - stay tuned! Fires of the Past

Falcon Inn Fire - September 25, 1943

The Falcon Inn was located at Old Kingston Road and Deep Dene in the area known as Highland Creek. The closest (only) hall was Hall #1 on Birchmount Rd. Its an interesting read, especially when you take into account that what they did with about 6 fire fighters and two trucks - today would involve about 10 trucks and an infinite number of fire fighters.
You can read Fire Marshal W.J. Scott's report here.

Scarborough Fire Museum and Historical Building

(Old Hall #1)

The first Scarborough fire and police station that opened in 1925 is now home to the new museum. Scarborough Fire Station No. 1 was decommissioned in 1998 when firefighters moved into a new fire station at 3600 Danforth Ave.
One of the antiques on display is a 1945 Bickle fire truck that was originally purchased for the hall.  A group of  retired Scarborough firefighters volunteered many hours to renovate the vintage fire station and collect firefighting antiquities. The retirees continue serving their community by being available at the museum Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.

For group tours call 416-338-9236
Location: Birchmount Road & Highview Avenue
